Why A Flower Show?

“To me the sole purpose of a flower show is its educational value. So far as I am concerned, the flower show that has nothing to teach me is a complete failure. The number of blue ribbons that I may be able to collect has nothing to do with it.Naturally, the better growers will have the most to teach me; the more there are of them, the more I can learn. If they get the blue and I can find how and why they did, I get the information cheap. The idea of awards must be kept secondary to the true purpose of the show, which is education. As soon as the award becomes the primary purpose, the death of the show is assured.”

-By Ernest L. Scott, Founder of the National Chrysanthemum Society
